Feeling bored by our everyday surroundings is a familiar experience. Even when beauty surrounds us, we often stop noticing it, especially in a time of constant change, when we are always searching for something new.
In my (yet unpublished) book Das Auge geht auf (eng. The little eye opens up), the eye becomes a symbol of curiosity, observation, and a shift in perspective. It leaves its body and travels through the mountains, encountering different animals found in nature. All of them feel bored and long for new experiences, just as the eye itself does.
Through these encounters, the eye offers a different way of seeing and learns in the process. In the end, it returns to the mountains where it grew up, now able to appreciate their beauty again before falling asleep.
The illustrations were created analogously using black Japanese sumi-ink on large-format paper, then scanned and reduced in size.
